Earth depicts angels and demons cast as opposites. Good, evil, pure, fallen. In reality they are neither- just guardians of either heaven or hell.
In the past there was only one guardian race. They were beyond imagination: a nearly transparent silver spirit that clearly had a gender, but it was impossible to make out their features. They were winged, but even their wings were indescribable, being not dragonlike, butterflylike, birdlike, or any other creature. They were completely alien, having neither the need for food, drink, or anything the common body needed. They did not reproduce- the same number the universe had started with would always remain the same, for the Guardians were completely immortal.
However, once humans came about, their goal shifted to guarding the thing most essential to a life: its soul. They noticed that after death there was no reward or punishment, just a finality. It unsettled them, so they created the places heaven and hell. They split up- a third became the guardians of heaven, a third became the guardians of hell, and the remainder stayed on Earth; healing the savagery the humans wrecked on their planet.
Something strange happened to the separate forces. As time progressed, they adapted to their surroundings. The ones on Earth evolved into what humans recognize as nymphs, dryads, and nyads. (Associated with the air, earth, and water, respectably.) They became the most human in mind- they did not reproduce or eat, but their aloof personalities changed and some actually would take human lovers for a time. They blended into their surroundings. Similar things were happening to the guardians in heaven and hell. Those in the former took on a divine, beautiful appearance, most wings turning to whites or golds and becoming bird or bat like in appearance. It wasn't a choice, it was what became expected of them from those inhabiting heaven. And so their alien appearance was shed, and their likeness became associated with Angels. The others in hell became known as devils, and had developed frightening appearance, although they too had bird or bat like wings. Where the Earth-dwelling guardians had become human in mind, the Angels and Demons had become more human in body.
It would be wrong to say their minds had not changed at all. They were more emotional, but none had ever, persay, fallen in love or the like. It would also be erroneous to suggest that the Demons were evil and Angels good- they had their own basic personalities, and merely just guarded heaven and hell without any black-and-white alignment.
