You've heard of them, haven't you? Popular in stories, shows, movies. There's even those crazed ones out there who believe they are real and try to hunt them or become one of them. But no, they no longer exist in your world of Earth...
Long ago, in the early 1900's, the vampires were becoming overly hunted, thanks to a certain book by Bram Stoker. As ficticious as it was, there had been truth -enough truth- for the vampires to be suspected and hunted. In desperation, they turned to the Angels and Demons for help, who offered to take them to middle world under a few conditions.
The condition was to take away most of their power. Shapeshifting- gone. Ability to turn someone- gone. Strength, speed, and senses were reduced although they still remained higher than any human's. They retained their beauty and thirst, for those could not be taken away, and were given a contract. They could live in Middle World where they would be undisturbed, and given a pool of blood in the mountains that would never cease, if they acted as tempters of the humans. They accepted; how hard would it be to tempt the humans and lead the astray to hell?
Vampires live in Bethanos although they may retreat to the mountains. In Bethanos they test the character of people and their resolve, in the mountains it's a quiet refuge where they can be with their own kind. They feast on blood, but attacking regular people are rare as the Blood Pool serves them well. They may eat regular foods too, but the substances do not sustain them. They can reproduce but it's very, very rare. Because they have been around their own kind for so long, most marriage-type relationships have deteriorated, and many of the vampires are despondent, bored with their job and resigned to the fact that it will never end.
Vampires are only partially immortal. They can heal from nearly any wound and don't fall sick, but fire and decapitation will kill them.
